RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."
Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
